Inderbir Singh “Ish” Sodhi is a New Zealand international cricketer who represents the New Zealand national team in all formats, and Northern Districts in domestic cricket. He bowls right-arm leg spin, and bats right-handed.
Born: October 31, 1992 (age 25), Ludhiana, India
Date joined: October 9, 2013 (New Zealand national cricket team)
Batting style: Right-handed
Current teams: New Zealand national cricket team, MORE
Parents: Rajbir Singh Sodhi, Simrat Sodhi
Nationality: New Zealand, Indian
Born in the Indian state Punjab, Sodhi moved to South Auckland when his parents migrated at a young age. He was an underrated bowler, until he left school early and started to train under Dipak Patel and Matt Horne. After a good season for Norhtern Districts, he was selected for the New Zealand A squad to tour the sub-continent. He had a decent tour which helped him gain his first Test cap against Bangladesh at Chittagong. Sodhi has looked good in patches in the handful of Tests that he has played.
Being a leg-spinner and a lone one in the squad he has had responsibility put on his shoulders at a very young age. He is also a decent lower-order bat who has already got a Test fifty to his name.
After being thrusted into Test cricket at the age of 20, Sodhi had a very rough induction and didn’t seem to be ready for the grueling nature of the beast. Some time off of Test matches has allowed him to settle into international cricket via the shorter formats. It’s well documented that spin bowlers get better with experience, more so leg-spinners. A Test recall came to pass only recently and the leggie looks hungry to prove a point.
