Veteran actor Geeta Kapoor passed away on May 26, in the morning around 9.00 AM, at SRV Hospital in Mumbai.
He said, “Geeta ji finally passed away, we tried our level best to care for her, but she finally gave up. She kept waiting for her children for last one full year, but no one came to meet her. Only last Saturday we had arranged a grand breakfast to cheer her up, she was okay too, but she was not happy from inside, as she wanted to see her children one last time.
She had a natural death as she was not keeping well because of her age, she passed away today, around 9.00 AM.”
Pandit also tweeted about the same. He mentioned in a tweet, “Standing besides the dead body of Actress #GeetaKapoor 57 who was abandoned by her kids in #SRVHospital a year back breathed her last at a suburban Old age home today morning. We tried our best to keep her healthy but her wait for her Son&daughter made her weaker day by day. #RIP”
The filmmaker thanked producer Ramesh Taurani for his support.
The late veteran actor had worked in over one hundred films with a major role in Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah where she played Rajkumar’s second wife. The film had Meena Kumari in the lead. Kapoor’s son, Raja, is said to be a choreographer. Her daughter, Pooja, is an air hostess.
Raja, the actor’s son had apparently abandoned her last year, and never returned to check on her. CBFC member Ashoke Pandit and filmmaker Ramesh Taurani had then paid the hospital bills of the veteran actor and cared for her.
Pakeezah actress Geeta Kapoor, who breathed her last on Saturday, was cremated by her daughter and sisters late Sunday night. Her son Raja is still nowhere to be found.
The actress’s daughter, Aradhya, surfaced several hours after her demise and quietly completed her last rites.
Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit and producer Ramesh Taurani, who cleared Geeta Kapoor’s hospital bills after her son abandoned her in an old age home in Mumbai, had no information about the cremation.
Kapoor’s son, meanwhile, is still nowhere to be seen.
Pandit took to Twitter to express his disappointment. “The daughter & sisters of late actress #GeetaKapoor Ji performed her last rites, late last night. Even though Dr. Tripathi, Old Age Home sisters, #ArchanaShourie & I requested them to inform us so that we, who stood by her pain, are part of her last journey. But they didn’t. Sad!” wrote the filmmaker.
In her last days, it was Pandit and producer Ramesh Taurani who were by Geeta’s side.
Pandit told a website, “I called up the doctors to check on the matter and they informed me that the actress’s last rites have been done by daughter Aradhya, last night. They didn’t want anybody to be present and son is still nowhere in the scene.”
After her death, Pandit took to Twitter to say, “Her body will be kept at Cooper Hospital Vileparle for two days hoping her Children to come and atleast do the last rites Otherwise We wl do our best to bid her a dignified good bye.. Thank U #DrTripathi SRV Hospital @MumbaiPolice #JivanAshaoldHome for being a great help. #RIP (sic)”
Last year, Geeta Kapoor’s son left her in an old age home and ran away. The yesteryear actress told a tabloid back then that her son Raja used to beat her up after she objected to his philandering ways.
She had also shared that her son would give her food only once in four days and when she fell sick, he left her at the hospital and was never seen again. After the case got media attention, filmmakers Ashoke Pandit and Ramesh Taurani came forward to help the veteran actress.
Till she breathed her last, Geeta apparently kept saying, “Mera Raja aayega (My Raja will come).”
Geeta Kapoor is best known for her role as Kamal Amrohi’s second wife in the 1972 film Pakeezah. She died on May 26, at the age of 67.
